Single women of color in a financially precarious situation

According to a new study, the financial situations of single women of color are so precarious, the study found, that just one unpaid sick day or appliance repair would send about half of them into debt. It is both their race and marital status that factor into their financial predicament.

Single black and Hispanic women have one penny of wealth for every dollar of wealth owned by their male counterparts and a tiny fraction of a penny for every dollar of wealth owned by white women.

One is the Loneliest Number:  The Single Taxpayer in a Joint Return World

This research paper, published by Seattle University School of Law in 2009, assesses ability of married couples to file a joint income tax return and the negative impact of this practice on single people.  It challenges fundamental assumptions underlying the creation of the joint tax return in 1968 and concludes that "single people are unduly penalized under the joint return, and that it ought to be abolished."

The article is written by Associate Professor Lily Kahng.  To view the abstract of the research paper, click here.  To open or download the entire research paper, click here, and when you get to the targeted page, click on the "download" link next to the title of the article.  This will enable you to download the entire article or to open it for immediate viewing.

Sloan Work and Family Research Network: Focus on Single Workers

This network, located at Boston College, publishes an Effective Workplace Series.  Issue 17, which was just released, provides work-family information on single workers.  To view Issue 17, click here.

This issue begins with a quote which answers the following question: Why are the needs of single workers an important workplace issue?

“Changing demographics are causing employers to reevaluate benefits plans and work-life programs so they are fair to an ever diversifying workforce.  In order to attract and retain qualified employees, and increase profit, smart employers develop personnel policies that do not discriminate on the basis of the marital status or the family structure of their employees.”

Thomas Coleman, Executive Director, Unmarried America

Singles Rights Lobby Newsletter

Check out this political newsletter, published 10 years ago, and you will see that the federal issues affecting unmarried voters today are the same issues addressed in the newsletter back then.  One area of progress was the decision of the United States Supreme Court, in 2003, invalidating criminal laws that infringe on the sexual privacy rights of consenting adults.  But otherwise, federal law remains pretty much the same -- no protection against marital status discrimination.  And unmarried Americans continue to be ignored by politicians and political parties.
