September 19, 2011 Celebrating Unmarried and Single Americans Week The third full week of September is designated each year as a time to recognize unmarried and single Americans and their contributions to our society. There are more than 106 million unmarried adults in the United States and unmarried adults head up a majority of the nation's households. June 23, 2011 Census reveals "family diversity" as the norm in California The Los Angeles Times published a story today, with graphics and charts, showing that California is the land of "family diversity" when it comes to households and living arrangements. The percent of traditional nuclear families is down, while the percent of households headed by unmarried adults is up. To read this story, click here.
May 26, 2011 Unmarried households dominant form of living arrangement in US The Census Bureau released the final batch of household data for the nation and all 50 states today. The results show that 51.6 of the nation's households are headed by unmarried adults. A majority of households were unmarried in 37 of the 50 states in 2010. New York was the only state with an unmarried majority in 1990 and only 5 other states fit that category in 2000. March 4, 2011 Civil union bill enacted in Hawaii, another one advances in Colorado Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed SB 232 into law on Feb. 23, 2011. When it takes effect on Jan. 1, 2012, the new law would give parties to a civil union the same rights and obligations as legally married spouses under Hawaii state law. Civil unions are available to all couples regardless of gender. I wrote a commentary about the history of comprehensive domestic partnerships and civil unions in Hawaii, noting that I introduced the concept to the Legislature in 1995. SB 172. December 13, 2010 Straight couple denied civil partnership in UK A heterosexual couple applied for, and was denied, a civil partnership registration in the United Kingdom. November 10, 2010 Gender Restrictions Challenged in UK Opposite-sex couples will challenge UK's civil partnership law which excludes them and same-sex couples will challenge the marriage law which excludes them. Eight couples plan to file suit to challenge the gender restrictions in these laws, arguing that couples should be allowed to choose either civil partnership or marriage, regardless of their genders. Tuesday, September 28, 2010 Percent of Unmarried Households in USA Continues to Rise The Census Bureau released results today from the American Community Survey (ACS) for 2009. The ACS is an annual survey taken of 3 million households in the United States. The percent of the nation's households headed by unmarried adults has risen to 50.9. For the past five years, married-couple households have been outnumbered by unmarried households. In terms of per capita data, there were 106.4 million adults in the United States who were unmarried in 2009. That is up from 104 million in 2008. Thursday, September 16, 2010 Census Bureau: most US households headed by unmarried people The Census Bureau released a report today which shows that 50.3% of households it surveyed in March 2010 did not contain a married couple. These households were headed by unmarried adults. Of the 117.5 million households in the United States, 58,410 contained a married couple. To view the statistical table, click here.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 Judge declares California's Proposition 8 unconstitutional A federal district court judge today ruled that it was unconstitutional for the State of California to deny same-sex couples the right to legally marry. In the ruling, the judge invalidated Proposition 8, the initiative passed by voters to prohibit the state from issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. Tuesday, March 9, 2010 One is the Loneliest Number: The Single Taxpayer in a Joint Return World This research paper, published by Seattle University School of Law in 2009, assesses ability of married couples to file a joint income tax return and the negative impact of this practice on single people. It challenges fundamental assumptions underlying the creation of the joint tax return in 1968 and concludes that "single people are unduly penalized under the joint return, and that it ought to be abolished."

Thursday, March 4, 2010 Singles Rights Lobby Newsletter Check out this political newsletter, published 10 years ago, and you will see that the federal issues affecting unmarried voters today are the same issues addressed in the newsletter back then. One area of progress was the decision of the United States Supreme Court, in 2003, invalidating criminal laws that infringe on the sexual privacy rights of consenting adults. But otherwise, federal law remains pretty much the same -- no protection against marital status discrimination. And unmarried Americans continue to be ignored by politicians and political parties.
